How to choose a hot tub lodge: 7 things to check

A few minutes of checking before you book can make the difference between a good break and a great one.

1. Is the hot tub private or shared?

Most lodge listings mention a hot tub, but some are shared between several properties. If you want it to yourselves, check it says “private”.

2. Does it really sleep everyone comfortably?

“Sleeps 6” can mean three proper bedrooms, or two bedrooms and a sofa bed in the lounge. Check the bedroom layout, especially with older children or two couples.

3. What are the dog rules?

Dog-friendly lodges usually limit the number of dogs, and some charge a fee per dog. Check whether there’s an enclosed garden or decking if your dog likes to wander.

4. Which day can you arrive?

Many lodge parks run Monday to Friday and Friday to Monday breaks, so a Sunday or Wednesday arrival can be harder to find. If your dates are flexible by a day, you’ll usually get more choice.

5. What’s on the park?

Some parks have a pool, restaurant, bar and kids’ activities. Others are quiet and secluded. Decide which you’d prefer, as it changes the feel of the whole break.

6. What do other guests say?

Reviews are the best guide to cleanliness, how well the hot tub is looked after and how helpful the owners are. I look for places rated 4.5 out of 5 or higher.

7. What’s the real price for your dates?

“From” prices are often for a quieter week. Always check the price for your exact dates and number of guests, including any pet charges.
